From 12-16 October 2020, the global quantum community came together for the inaugural and completely virtual IEEE Quantum Week (QEC20). Quantropi participated in this exciting global event as a thought leader, presenter, and Gold Sponsor.
The event started with a memorable keynote address by Dr. Jerry Chow, the Manager of Experimental Quantum Computing at IBM. Jerry specializes in superconducting qubit quantum computing and knows a thing (or two) about quantum error correction and quantum machine learning. In his session, Quantum Circuits: Rocket Fuel for the Future of Quantum Hardware, Jerry provided an overview of the IBM quantum effort that aims to solve complex, real-world problems that even the most powerful supercomputers cannot. The focus of his session was the complex quantum circuit, which he believes should be the unit (or “currency”) of computations, just like the qubit is a unit of information. By leveraging this unique “lens”, IBM is exploring ways to improve the performance of its core superconducting qubit systems for numerous real-world applications including quantum simulations, linear systems, and quantum walks. The approach is very interesting. Of course, so far, IBM has not managed to produce the high-fidelity quantum circuits required to actually achieve the performance levels required in the real world. But as one of the enterprise pioneers of the modern quantum age that’s bolstered by the growing IBM Q Network, this goal is not impossible for the company.
In his session, Jerry also discussed the key elements that he thinks are crucial to bolstering the quantum industry:
1. Relevant and complex hardware
2. Cloud and quantum software such as IBM’s Qiskit – which incidentally was the subject of another QEC20 session on Day 1: Introduction to Qiskit Quantum Programming ), and
3. Quantum workforce
While these elements are crucial, we believe that a fourth element, the quantum community will also play a critical role in bringing us closer to a true “age of quantum”.
Quantropi is becoming the new standard for quantum secure communications in the real world. Our unique patented QEEP™ quantum gate technology is both lightweight and exceptionally powerful, efficiently distributing true random keys over the existing Internet – with magnitudes of entropy beyond anything on the market, throughputs up to gigabits per second and 100% standards compliance.
